She started out in 1999 in an independent software house – a “commercial” POO (PMO of One) and now she am Head of Digital PMO for the Houses of Parliament.  In between she has worked for a lot of the well-known UK institutions across the public and private sector: Canon UK, Arval UK (a subsidiary of BNP Paribas), Moneysupermarket.com, the Research Councils Shared Services Centre, Cadburys and UCAS – all within PMO with a couple of stints of hands on delivery.

Having worked in PMOs for 20+ years now, Carol has developed a passion for building happy, healthy, high performing teams.  An ardent PMO Flashmobber and speaker at the 2019 PMO Conference on the role of the “Caring PMO”, she is also the co-author of the PMO Competency Framework with a view to sharing her expertise with others and multiplying PMO people.

The P3O® Foundation level course is specifically for:

  • Those new to PMO – working in Project Administrator, Project Co-ordinator and Project Support Officer roles
  • Those new to a career in PMO with previous PPM experience
  • Those looking for a career move to project support and PMO
  • Graduates

In the course, learners will:

  • Learn about the high-level P3O model and its component offices.
  • Understand the key differences between Portfolio, Programme and Project Management.
  • Explore the key functions and services of a P3O.
  • Understand the reasons for establishing a P3O model.
  • Learn about the differences between types of P3O model and the factors that influence the selection of the most appropriate model.
  • Identify the processes to implement or re-energize a P3O.
  • Learn about the tools and techniques used by a P3O.
  • Understand the purpose and significant responsibilities of the defined roles in a P3O.
  • Prepare to pass the P3O Foundation exam and become P3O Foundation certified.

After the course, learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a greater understanding of Project, Programme and Portfolio Management in the context of P3O.
  • Demonstrate a better understanding of the different types of PMOs within the P3O model.
  • Understand and articulate the need for PMOs within an organisation.

The P3O® Foundation Certification is considered to be the entry-level training and certification for those working in a Programme or Project Management Office.

The course covers the fundamentals of P3O®, giving you a solid foundation in the P3O® model, the terminology and concepts involved – the course also covers the key functions and services in a P3O® model – considered to be one of the most useful areas for a PMO practitioner. The course also covers the tools and techniques used in a P3O® and looks at the different types of PMOs with the model.

  • Module 2: Overview, Principles of a P3O Model
  • Module 3: Why have a P3O?
  • Module 4: Models and Tailoring
  • Module 5: Implementing and Re-energizing

Exam: 2 hours 30 minutes (4 questions of 20 marks)

Pre-Requisites: You must have already passed your P3O® Foundation

The P3O® Practitioner level course is specifically for:

  • Those leading or managing a PMO function – PMO Managers, PMO Lead, PMO Director and Head of PMO roles.
  • Those tasked with designing and implementing a PMO function

In the course, learners will:

  • Understand how to develop the business case required to obtain senior management approval for the P3O.
  • Explore how to identify and build the most appropriate P3O model, which will adapt to the organization’s needs, taking account of the organization’s size and portfolio, programme and project management maturity.
  • Learn how to identify the most appropriate roles required to populate a specified P3O structure.
  • Learn how to plan the implementation of a P3O.
  • Learn how to choose and use appropriate tools and techniques while running the P3O and advising those who shape the portfolio of programmes and projects.
  • Prepare to pass the P3O Practitioner exam and become P3O Practitioner certified.

After the course, learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a greater understanding of how to create a business case and mandate for the P3O.
  • Understand how P3Os are structured throughout the organisation.
  • Use the P3O model and blueprint for implementing a P3O model.
  • Demonstrate which functions, services, tools and techniques are needed throughout the high-level P3O model and component offices.
  • Share group experiences and develop knowledge within the organisation.
  • Demonstrate progress to becoming a competent PMO practitioner and manager.

The P3O® Practitioner Certification follows on from the P3O® Foundation. Where the Foundation certification focuses on the fundamentals of P3O®, the Practitioner level is about the application of P3O®.

The Practitioner course covers the design, implementation and management of a P3O model. You will gain an overall understanding of the elements, roles, functions and tools and techniques deployed in a generalized P3O model.
