Troubled projects are a fact of life for organizations that strive to excel. Detecting when projects (and programs) are getting into trouble and helping them recover is a process of several steps and the sign of a mature organization that accepts trouble is a side-effect of accepting challenges.

This course is about how to fix the problems that arise.

Understanding how to apply the process is essential for managers responsible for project monitoring such as PMO leads and Program Directors so that they can detect and recover projects before its too late. All Program and Project managers will also find it useful to know the techniques to detect trouble, diagnose its possible causes and apply corrections so that they stay out of failure scenarios.

Detection, diagnosis and recovery is a simple process with aligned techniques and tools (although the challenges within projects that are identified and need to be addressed may not be so simple!)

This course ensures you have the knowledge to apply the process’s steps to projects (and departments and functions) in your organization. The course provides a step-by-step route-map for how to determine a recommended course of actions leading to ‘kill-or-cure’ decisions and recovery or closure actions.

Increasingly project professionals are being called upon to deliver results in a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) world.

Often the organisation’s expectation of how to exercise control is unchanged from how to manage simple projects. This is naive and a path to failure. The simple fact is a project that is complex cannot be planned in advance because complexity creates the emergence of the unforeseeable. But that does not mean we stop being in control.

It does mean our control regime changes. We must add to management and prediction the means to leverage discovery, we must be leaders and enablers who use sociology, motivational self-interest and feedback loops to discover solution paths and fast reaction times to stay safe.

This course explains HOW to balance a mix of leadership and management with communication and team behaviours. Done right project team members have freedom and constraint that enable them to deliver what can’t be achieved by pre-planned steps while being under control.

The concepts and principles in this course come from:

  • Complex Adaptive Systems
  • The Prussian Army (Commander’s Intent)
  • Nature and evolution

They ADD to rather, than completely replace, the ‘engineering’ ideas in the PMBoK-Guide.

The Agile software movement observed many of the same issues and used the same sources to build a localized solution for software. The concepts and practices have been applied across the globe in every industry and organizations of all sizes.

How to prosper from the changes created by Covid-19 is EXACTLY the sort of project to apply this course to:

  • Build a solid understand of the concepts of complexity in projects
  • Know how to recognise the
  • Develop the skills to use the complexity concepts to motivate teams who can develop solutions for the organisation’s VUCA challenges.
  • Learn the steps to create reactive control regimes for work that does not suit predictive planning
  • Tailor the mix of leadership and management to each work-stream’s needs phase by phase
  • Create the circumstances to ‘be lucky’. Luck isn’t random. ‘Luck’ is when careful preparation and opportunity coincide
  • Project and Programme Directors and Managers
  • Portfolio Office Managers
  • Project Owners, Project Executives, SROs
  • PMO and P3O professionals
  • Senior Executives
  • Steering committee members
  • Participants in complex projects
  • Take-away an actionable framework (default pattern) of actions with techniques
  • Apply thinking tools equal to leading through complexity
  • Understand how to adapt and replace steps, techniques and tools to match specific local needs.
  • Ironically describing how to lead in complex contexts is simple. Perhaps unsurprisingly mastering the simple takes time and practice. This course introduces everything you need to start the journey but could never claim to be everything you’ll need on the journey. Those additions will be personal to your discovery but you will be on the path.
